How plywood is made: thirteen steps from log to panel

Plywood is made by gluing an odd number of veneer plies together with the grain of each ply running at right angles to its neighbour, then pressing them. The odd number is not a convention: if the two outer faces do not share a grain direction, the panel cups to one side as it dries. The crossed lay-up covers timber's weakest axis — solid wood is strong along the grain and weak across it, and crossing the plies cancels that difference. What plywood is, and why the plies are crossed

Solid wood behaves differently along each axis: it is strong along the grain, markedly weaker across it, and it moves across the grain as humidity changes. Plywood answers that directly — it glues thin veneer plies on top of one another with the grain of each running at right angles to its neighbour.

The result is a panel that is balanced in both directions, because every ply covers its neighbour’s weak axis. The same principle stabilises the panel against humidity: movement is locked in by the crossed plies.

Mills merge some steps and split others, but the order never changes, because each step consumes the output of the one before it.

Thickness and ply count

Birch plywood builds are standardised: as thickness rises, the ply count moves up in odd numbers. The last column shows how much of the finished panel one ply occupies — nominal thickness divided by ply count.

The practical value of that last column is this: the gap between it and the veneer thickness you feed in is the sum of press compression and sanding allowance. Making a 15 mm panel from 1.5 mm veneer, that gap is 0.136 mm per ply — roughly 9%.

Which veneer property shows up at which step

Panel quality is largely input quality. Four parameters, each surfacing in a different place.

Birch, poplar and combi builds

Using two species in one panel is common and sensible, because the plies do different jobs.

  • Face plies are visible and carry load. Birch is preferred here: 620–680 kg/m³, bending strength 120–144 N/mm², pale and uniform grain.
  • Core plies are never seen. Poplar is adequate there and makes the panel lighter; grown locally in Turkey, it is also cheaper.
  • Combi builds put the two together: birch faces, poplar core. The panel comes out cheaper and strong enough.

Turkey has no industrial-scale birch forest, so birch veneer is imported, while poplar is grown on the Sakarya and Düzce plains. The species comparison is on the birch versus poplar page.

Standards

Plywood is described by two separate systems, and buyer and seller often speak different ones: Russian production works to GOST, the Turkish buyer talks in TS EN. Grade letters, dimensional tolerances and emission classes do not map one to one between them. How the two line up is set out on the standards page.

How is plywood made, in short?

The log is debarked, softened in hot water or steam, peeled into a continuous ribbon on a rotary lathe, clipped to format, dried down to 5–8% moisture, graded, jointed and patched where needed, coated with adhesive, laid up in an odd number of plies with the grain crossed, cold pre-pressed and then hot pressed, conditioned, trimmed to size, sanded and graded a final time.

How many stages does plywood production have?

The industry usually counts thirteen: debarking and bucking, hydrothermal treatment, peeling, clipping to format, drying, grading, jointing and patching, adhesive application, lay-up, cold pre-pressing, hot pressing, conditioning, and trimming with sanding. Mills merge or split some of them, but the order does not change.

Why is the ply count always odd?

Because the two outer faces have to share a grain direction. If they do not, the faces respond differently to changes in humidity and the panel cups. Two outer plies with the same grain direction are only possible when the total is odd — which is why standard builds run 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 plies.

How much veneer does one m³ of plywood take?

The geometric floor is veneer thickness divided by the ply thickness inside the panel. For example: a 15 mm panel is 11 plies, so one ply occupies 1.364 mm; with 1.5 mm veneer that ratio is 1.10, meaning at least 1.10 m³. Real consumption sits above that, because trimming, the sanding allowance and veneer rejected at grading all add to it. That margin is set by the yield of your own line.

Why are the logs steamed?

Cold timber splits as it is peeled and the ribbon breaks up. Hydrothermal treatment — a hot water vat or steam — softens the wood so the knife cuts cleanly and the ribbon comes off continuous. Time and temperature are set by species and log diameter; birch runs a different regime from poplar.

What is the difference between phenolic and urea adhesive?

Phenolic adhesive gives a water-resistant bond, which is what exterior, formwork and marine uses require, and the panel is then classified as WBP. Urea-based adhesive is cheaper and adequate for interior use. The choice also affects the emission class of the panel, which is where the E1 and E0 designations come in.
