What this cluster makes
Düzce is the densest veneer cluster in the country after Istanbul: 11 veneer producers listed on Fordaq, and a zone of its own dedicated to the trade — Düzce Orman Ürünleri OSB, the organised industrial zone for forest products. Along the Merkez, Kaynaşlı and Gümüşova axis, peeling lines, dryers and press shops sit side by side.
One technical feature of this cluster sets the whole supply conversation: local mills peel mostly poplar. The reason is simple — poplar is grown right next door, on the Sakarya and Düzce plains, so it carries no import leg whatsoever. Turkey, meanwhile, has no industrial birch forest: birch is imported, whoever ends up buying it.
For a purchasing decision the conclusion is this: local veneer does not replace birch. The two species work in different layers of the same panel.

Poplar sits in the 400–550 kg/m³ band, birch at 620–680 kg/m³. In the core that gap is not a problem — it is an advantage, since it keeps the panel light. On the face, and in any layer expected to hold a screw, the same gap turns straight into warranty claims. So in Düzce the conversation does not open with “birch or poplar”. It opens with which layer gets which.

Gebze is the natural gateway for Düzce. It is 175 km, a single truck run with no transhipment, and the sea-and-rail leg feeding it is the cheapest in the network: the Novorossiysk–Gebze/Ambarlı direction runs 90–120 USD/m³ in 22–32 days.
Ambarlı is the far end of that same leg — the freight line item is identical, and the only thing that changes is 260 km of inland haulage instead of 175. The 85 km gap is paid once for the whole 33–40 m³ in the container, which is why Ambarlı only comes up when your customs broker or interim warehouse is on the European side. Samsun, at 510 km, is not a live option here; that Black Sea port serves the eastern provinces, not Düzce.
Next to Istanbul’s 25 km and Bursa’s 70, a 175 km leg looks long. What changes the picture in practice is that inland haulage is costed per container, not per cubic metre: the same truck carries 33–40 m³, so the distance comes down to a small line item per m³. Who needs birch veneer here
Unlike other regions, the buyer here already knows veneer inside out: he peels it, dries it and presses it himself. So the conversation is technical rather than introductory — thickness tolerance, moisture band, grade distribution.

Mills peeling poplar. If the core comes off your own line, the lower grades of a mixed 1–4 lot stay on your hands with nowhere to go — that space is already filled with poplar. In that situation buying grade 1–2 sorted separately is almost always the smaller number. Decide on the cost per square metre of face in the finished panel, not on the price per cubic metre.
Presses. If you buy the core in as well, the arithmetic reverses: a mixed 1–4 lot is used end to end, top grade to the faces, lower grade into the core, and nothing is left over. How it splits across a panel recipe is set out under plywood production.
Load-bearing layers. This is where birch genuinely parts company with poplar: density 620–680 kg/m³, bending strength 120–144 N/mm². When a panel has to take sustained load, survive repeated use or hold a screw, those two figures decide it.

How to start
At a plant with its own peeling line, a sample is tested differently: instead of examining the veneer on its own, press it as a face over your own poplar core. There are three things to watch — whether a moisture gap shows at the glue line, whether the thickness tolerance suits your drying regime, and where the tone variation lands once the panel is pressed.
