Birch veneer or poplar veneer?

Poplar veneer is 30–40% cheaper; birch is clearly stronger, at 120–144 N/mm² in bending. Poplar is the sensible choice for economy formwork and packaging; birch belongs in door skins, furniture faces, bent-laminated parts, marine plywood and high-turnover formwork. The comparison should be made on the finished panel — layers, waste and selling price — not on a cubic metre of raw material.

The short answer

Is kayın (beech) the same as huş (birch)?

No — they are two different trees. Huş is birch, Betula: 620–680 kg/m³, 120–144 N/mm² in bending, the base raw material of rotary-cut veneer and plywood, imported into Turkey from Russia and the Nordics. Kayın is beech, Fagus sylvatica: 640–720 kg/m³, a domestic species from the Black Sea forests, on an 80–120 year rotation, and its place is the premium end of solid furniture. The comparison on this page is birch against poplar; beech is a third material that is regularly pulled into the same conversation by mistake.

The two words are mixed up constantly in Turkish, and the confusion travels all the way into the specification. The commercial consequence is concrete: a buyer who writes kayın into the spec and then benchmarks the price against birch is putting the figures of two different materials side by side — different density, different supply chain, different price level.

The practical rule: ask for the specification with the Latin species name on it. If the document says Betula you are buying birch; if it says Fagus you are buying beech. We produce rotary-cut birch veneer only, and the species is recorded as Betula on the shipping documents and the certificate of origin.

How to compare prices properly

Poplar plywood in Turkey sells 30–40% below birch. That is not in dispute. What is worth disputing is the unit the comparison is made in.

Measured per cubic metre of raw material, poplar wins every time. But your customer is not buying raw material — they are buying a finished panel. So the calculation needs to run on three lines instead:

Layer count. If you reach the same strength at the same thickness with fewer plies, glue consumption and press time fall with it.

Waste. Harder, more uniform veneer loses less in cutting and pressing. That is cost per square metre, directly.

Selling segment. A birch-faced panel sells above a poplar-faced one. The Turkish price gap itself — €672 against €535 per m³ — is the proof: the market is willing to pay the difference.

Which belongs where

Poplar is enough for: economy formwork plywood, packaging and pallets, inner core layers, low-cycle site material.

Birch is required for: door panel faces, visible furniture surfaces, bent-laminated parts such as chair backs and seats, marine plywood, and film-faced formwork aimed at a high cycle count.

Combi is usually the best answer: birch face over poplar core. It is the most common solution in Turkey, and a mixed grade 1–4 batch serves it precisely — one order producing both face and core veneer.

Frequently asked questions

Why is poplar so much cheaper?

Because it grows fast. Poplar is on a 10–15 year rotation against a much longer one for birch, and in Turkey it is grown locally in Sakarya, Düzce and Kocaeli — so there is no import leg either.

Can I use both in combi plywood?

Yes, and it is the common solution: birch face over a poplar core. You get birch's clean, hard surface where it shows and poplar's price where it does not. A mixed grade 1–4 batch suits this exactly — one order yields both face and core veneer.

Does formwork plywood need birch?

It depends on the number of pours. For economy formwork with few cycles, poplar is enough. Where you are targeting a high cycle count and a clean concrete finish, a birch face makes a visible difference: the panel lasts longer and the cost per pour falls.

Is beech an alternative?

It is a different class. Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is heavier at 640–720 kg/m³ and sits in the premium furniture segment. Note for Turkish readers: huş is birch and kayın is beech — the words get confused, but they are entirely different trees.

Do you also sell beech veneer?

No — we produce rotary-cut birch veneer only, recorded as *Betula* on the shipping documents and the certificate of origin. Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a different species on a different supply chain and belongs mainly to solid furniture; the raw material of the plywood and veneer industry is birch.

Our specification says kayın. Which one do we actually need?

Look at the application. If you are producing plywood cores or faces, door panels, bent-laminated parts or formwork panels, what you want is birch, Betula. If you are producing solid furniture components and chair frames, it is beech, Fagus sylvatica. Write the specification with the Latin species name in it: that one-line correction removes the risk of the wrong material arriving.

How do I compare the price properly?

Not per cubic metre of raw material, but per square metre of the panel you produce and the price you sell it at. If birch gets you the same strength with fewer layers, cuts your waste, and lets you sell into a higher segment, the gap per cubic metre closes.
