The short answer
Poplar is cheap, birch is strong. It is not quite that simple, but that is where it starts.

Is kayın (beech) the same as huş (birch)?
No — they are two different trees. Huş is birch, Betula: 620–680 kg/m³, 120–144 N/mm² in bending, the base raw material of rotary-cut veneer and plywood, imported into Turkey from Russia and the Nordics. Kayın is beech, Fagus sylvatica: 640–720 kg/m³, a domestic species from the Black Sea forests, on an 80–120 year rotation, and its place is the premium end of solid furniture. The comparison on this page is birch against poplar; beech is a third material that is regularly pulled into the same conversation by mistake.

The two words are mixed up constantly in Turkish, and the confusion travels all the way into the specification. The commercial consequence is concrete: a buyer who writes kayın into the spec and then benchmarks the price against birch is putting the figures of two different materials side by side — different density, different supply chain, different price level.
The practical rule: ask for the specification with the Latin species name on it. If the document says Betula you are buying birch; if it says Fagus you are buying beech. We produce rotary-cut birch veneer only, and the species is recorded as Betula on the shipping documents and the certificate of origin.
How to compare prices properly
Poplar plywood in Turkey sells 30–40% below birch. That is not in dispute. What is worth disputing is the unit the comparison is made in.
Measured per cubic metre of raw material, poplar wins every time. But your customer is not buying raw material — they are buying a finished panel. So the calculation needs to run on three lines instead:
Layer count. If you reach the same strength at the same thickness with fewer plies, glue consumption and press time fall with it.
Waste. Harder, more uniform veneer loses less in cutting and pressing. That is cost per square metre, directly.
Selling segment. A birch-faced panel sells above a poplar-faced one. The Turkish price gap itself — €672 against €535 per m³ — is the proof: the market is willing to pay the difference.
Which belongs where
Poplar is enough for: economy formwork plywood, packaging and pallets, inner core layers, low-cycle site material.
Birch is required for: door panel faces, visible furniture surfaces, bent-laminated parts such as chair backs and seats, marine plywood, and film-faced formwork aimed at a high cycle count.
Combi is usually the best answer: birch face over poplar core. It is the most common solution in Turkey, and a mixed grade 1–4 batch serves it precisely — one order producing both face and core veneer.
