Three things come back in exchange: your cutting waste goes to zero, the grade 1–2 share rises from 22–27% to 50%, and a 40'HC holds 42 m³ instead of 33 — which takes freight from 120 down to 94 USD per m³. Work the whole calculation through and the net premium is roughly 115 USD per cubic metre: the price of the cutting work and of the defect sorting that comes with it.

What you are actually buying: not having a cutting line

Technically the 420 × 420 mm blank is the same birch veneer as everything else we make — same logs, same line, same moisture band. One thing is different: the cutting is done at our end.

Which means what you are buying is not wood but a process step removed from your shop. It makes sense for producers who have no cutting line, and for those who have one but would rather give its hours to higher-value operations.

Who buys these squares: furniture frames and bent lamination

The format explains itself. 420 × 420 mm is enough for a chair seat, a backrest, a case side panel or a small bent-laminated part — and none of those needs a 2600 × 1300 mm sheet.

The largest group of buyers is bent lamination: squares are stacked in a mould, glued and pressed into a curve to become a chair seat or backrest. The square format has two advantages here. First, the mould wants a square area to begin with — cutting that area out of a rectangular sheet is waste by definition. Second, in series production one format covers many models: the same 420 × 420 square becomes a different product in a different mould, and the warehouse holds a single stock item.

At 1.5 mm, one square is 0.1764 m² and 0.0002646 m³. A cubic metre yields roughly 3,779 pieces — so at 29,900 ₽/m³ that is about 7.9 ₽ per piece (≈ 0.10 USD). In series production it is easier to think in that unit: however many plies a chair seat eats, that is your input cost.

What the premium really is

On the list the gap between 29,900 ₽ and 17,500 ₽ is 71%. But those are not comparable numbers, because buying sheets and cutting them yourself still loses you part of the cubic metre. The fair comparison looks like this.

Net premium: roughly 115 USD per cubic metre. What that buys is the cutting work, the machine, the labour planning and — the item people forget most often — the sorting out of defects.

When sheet format is the better buy

The purpose of this page is not to sell blanks into every situation. Sheet format works out cheaper in three cases.

  • You already run a cutting line and its capacity is not fully taken. Then cutting costs you almost nothing at the margin and there is no reason to pay a premium.
  • Your part size is not 420 × 420 and your own waste ratio is low.
  • You put your offcut to work in another product — packaging, filler, fuel.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the 420×420 blank more expensive than a sheet?

Three items sit inside that difference: the cutting work, the offcut that stays with us, and the higher grade that comes from sorting defective areas out. The gap between 29,900 ₽/m³ and 17,500 ₽/m³ is 12,400 ₽. Around 1,100 ₽ of that is the offcut alone: cut the sheets yourself and about 6% goes to waste anyway, which puts your usable m³ at 18,620 ₽. The rest is cutting labour, the machine, and a grade 1–2 share that doubles.

How many blanks fit in a container?

A 40'HC holds 42 m³, which at 1.5 mm is about 158,700 pieces. The small format uses container volume more efficiently than anything else we make: 27% more than the 33 m³ of sheet format.

Is the grade 1–2 share really 50%?

Yes, and the reason is simple: during cutting the areas with knots and splits are separated out and never enter the lot. In sheet format the same defect stays inside the sheet, and a mixed lot runs at 22–27% grade 1–2. Cutting is itself an act of grading.

Can you cut blanks to a different size?

Yes. 420 × 420 mm became the standard simply because it is asked for most often, but we cut other sizes at the mill. The price depends on how much offcut your size produces — send us the dimensions and we will price a cubic metre for it.

Where are these blanks used?

Matches and sticks, small packaging, crate components, toys and giftware, internal furniture parts, and feeding a lamination line. What all of those have in common is that the finished item is small and running a cutting line for it makes no economic sense.

What thicknesses are available?

The same as for sheets: 0.9–1.7 mm, nominal 1.5 mm. Thin gauges are asked for more often on small blanks, because the finished article is usually light. Thickness tolerance is ±0.1 mm.

What is the minimum order?

We work by the container; in this format one 40'HC takes 42 m³. Below that, freight per cubic metre makes the offer pointless. If you load a railcar, the unit is 102 m³.
