What this cluster makes
İnegöl is Turkey’s furniture capital: 3,807 registered furniture companies, concentrated in İnegöl OSB, the organised industrial zone. Along the Nilüfer and Kestel axis sit panel and board processing plants. What stands at the centre of this cluster is not a press but a finished piece of furniture.
For supply, that one sentence changes everything.
A plywood mill uses a mixed grade 1–4 lot end to end: top grade goes to the outer layers, lower grade disappears into the core, and nothing is left over. In an eleven-ply panel only two layers show, so the requirement for top grade is about 18% of the volume — and the 22–27% share inside a mixed lot covers it on its own.
In furniture there is no core to hide anything in. The visible surface is the product: a door, a side panel, a drawer front is exactly where the customer looks. Buy the same mixed lot here and three quarters of the volume lands somewhere the business has no use for it. Which is why the right question in İnegöl is not “what does a cubic metre of veneer cost” but “what does a square metre of visible surface cost”.
How the cargo gets here
| Discharge port | By road, approx. km | Route from Russia | Sea/rail, days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemlik (Bursa)Shortest inland leg | 70 | Rail 40'HC → Novorossiysk → Gemlik / Izmir | 25–35 |
| Gebze (Kocaeli) | 150 | Rail 40'HC → Novorossiysk → Ambarlı | 22–32 |
| Ambarlı (İstanbul) | 200 | Rail 40'HC → Novorossiysk → Ambarlı | 22–32 |
İnegöl is Turkey’s furniture capital: 3,807 registered furniture companies. The buyer profile here is furniture and panels, not plywood.
Gemlik is Bursa’s own port. At 70 km it is the second shortest inland leg in the country after Istanbul, and it reaches İnegöl OSB in a single truck run.
Set against Ambarlı, two costs pull in opposite directions:
| Gemlik | Ambarlı | |
|---|---|---|
| Sea-and-rail freight | 105–140 USD/m³ | 90–120 USD/m³ |
| Transit | 25–35 days | 22–32 days |
| Road distance to Bursa | 70 km | 200 km |
The freight gap is 15–20 USD per m³; the inland gap is 130 km, and that one is paid once for the whole 33–42 m³ inside the container. Run the arithmetic on your own haulage rates — but in regular purchasing Gemlik usually comes out ahead, because a short leg saves handling time and damage risk as well as money. If you are consolidating with another Marmara shipment Ambarlı remains usable, with Gebze at 150 km as the option in between.
Who needs birch veneer here
Unlike the other regions we cover, there is no single standard product here. The cluster holds three distinct requirements.
| Type of production | Requirement | Product | Grade | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Furniture plant, visible surfaces | Clean, even-toned face | Sheet, format of your choice | Grade 1–2 | 35,000 ₽/m³ |
| Small parts, no cutting line | Waste and cutting labour removed | 420 × 420 pre-cut blanks | 50% grade 1–2 | 29,900 ₽/m³ |
| Panel and board cores | Strength at sensible cost | 1600 × 1600 or 1300 × 1300 | Mixed 1–4 | 17,500 ₽/m³ |
| Upholstered furniture frames | Bendability and screw holding | Thin veneer, 0.9–1.7 mm | Mixed 1–4 or grade 1–2 | 17,500–35,000 ₽/m³ |
Visible surfaces. What decides here is yield, not the price per m³. Picking face material out of a mixed 1–4 lot means using 22–27% of the volume and finding another home for the rest. If your face requirement is steady, buying grade 1–2 separately usually costs less overall.
Pre-cut blanks. Most İnegöl businesses make small parts in series. With 420 × 420 blanks the cutting waste goes to zero, the grade 1–2 share rises to 50%, and 42 m³ fit a container, taking freight from 120 down to 94 USD per m³. The full calculation is on the pre-cut blanks page.
Bent-laminated frames. The curved frame in a piece of upholstered furniture is built by bending and gluing thin layers. Why birch parts company with poplar here is a matter of numbers: density 620–680 kg/m³, bending strength 120–144 N/mm². When a part has to hold both its shape and a screw, those two figures decide it.

How to start
In furniture the first step is still a sample, but what you test is different from what a plywood mill tests: put the sample through your own finishing line. Lacquer and varnish bring out tone variation and absorbency that are invisible on the bare sheet.
Then a single trial container: 33 m³, 25–35 days via Gemlik. The step-by-step process, the clauses to fix in the contract and the checks on discharge are on the first order page. The customs side: customs clearance.
