What this cluster makes
Production in Kastamonu is concentrated along the Taşköprü–Tosya axis: plywood and panels. The largest local line runs 23,500 m³ a year, and investment in the industrial estates is continuing — this is not a static picture but one where new lines are being built.
The buyer profile takes one sentence: what sits here is a panel producer, not a furniture works and not a wholesale yard. Two supply consequences follow. First, buying is done to written specification — thickness tolerance, moisture band and grade distribution are the subject, not what veneer is. Second, volume is tied to line capacity and therefore to a calendar.
But what really separates Kastamonu from the rest of the provinces we cover is not what it makes — it is geography. Bozüyük, Düzce, Adapazarı, İnegöl all sit in the Marmara belt and all feed off a Marmara port. Kastamonu is inner Anatolia, opening onto the Black Sea. That single difference changes the port, the lot size and the choice of format alike.

Samsun here is not a preference but the only sensible gateway. The road leg is 290 km; Gebze is 460 km and Ambarlı 520 km. Freight to the Black Sea port is quoted per shipment — but the decision holds without that number: routing through the Marmara adds 170–230 kilometres of road, and that gap stays the same whichever port you discharge at.
In the Marmara provinces the choice of port is a genuine trade-off: freight on one side, kilometres on the other. In Kastamonu the calculation only points one way, because the road gap is too large for any freight difference to cover. Which is why the subject worth arguing about here is not the port but how many cubic metres you put on each vehicle.
Convert those 230 kilometres into your own figure like this: the inland leg is invoiced per vehicle, not per cubic metre. A container is one lorry, so the 230 km are paid once and divided across the 33–40 m³ inside it. Multiply your per-kilometre tariff by 230, divide by the cubic metres in the container, and that is the per-m³ number. Then add the calendar: 230 kilometres out and back is a driver’s shift, and one more day of exposure to waiting at the quay.
Why a bigger lot pays here
Every kilometre between quay and gate is money charged per vehicle, not per cubic metre. In Kastamonu that leg starts at 290 km; in the Marmara provinces it runs between 25 and 280 km. The result is that two questions come forward on every shipment — how many cubic metres fit on the same vehicle, and how many times a year you have to send that vehicle out at all.

Transit and freight to Samsun are quoted per shipment: we have no published Black Sea route, and putting a neighbouring line’s figure here would not be honest. The reference figure to measure against is the container route to Ambarlı — 90–120 USD/m³ over 22–32 days. That is a measure of the Marmara direction, not a delivered price into Kastamonu, and the decision does not need it anyway: the gap between 290 km and 460–520 km does not depend on the sea freight at all.
The railcar. 102 m³ — three containers’ worth of volume as one delivery unit, in 15–25 days. In Kastamonu the value of that route is not really its speed: it uses neither the port nor the 290 km inland leg. Do not compare the bare freight figures; on the container side, add port handling, the fixed cost carried by each clearance, and the 290 km lorry run, then look again.
Format. The same lorry carries 38 m³ in 1600 × 1600 against 33 m³ in 2600 × 1300. In the Marmara that 15% gap is a small line item; over 290 kilometres the same gap repeats on every shipment. Unless your press table demands 2600 mm, the square format is clearly ahead here: container loading.
Small boxes. A 20’DV takes just 15 m³ in 2600 × 1300 and uses about 35% of its payload. Near a port that is waste; over 290 kilometres you haul the same air by road as well.

The large line. On a line running 23,500 m³ a year what decides matters is not one lot but the likeness between lots. Having the thickness tolerance, the 5–8% moisture band and the grade distribution come out the same across three consecutive lots is worth more than an exceptional distribution in one: re-tuning the drying and gluing regime each time costs more than the price difference gained. Measurement records travel with every batch.
Face layers. If you make the core from your own material, the grade 1–2 share inside a mixed 1–4 lot stays at 22–27% and the lower grade accumulates on your hands. Pre-cut blanks. With 420 × 420 blanks the cutting waste goes to zero, the grade 1–2 share rises to 50%, and a container holds 42 m³. At a plant far from the port that third item matters twice over: the same lorry carries more usable material.

How to start
Press the sample inside your own recipe and take the moisture with your own meter — at a plant this far from the port, sending material back is the most expensive outcome there is, so the measuring belongs at the front.
Then choose the delivery unit. If you buy a few containers a year, one trial container is the sensible start: 33 m³ via Samsun, with transit and freight confirmed in the shipment quote. If your volume is larger, opening with a 102 m³ railcar is just as reasonable — you begin with delivery to the gate and never touch the 290 km leg at all.
