Birch veneer supply across Turkey: regions and ports

Veneer and plywood production in Turkey is concentrated in seven provinces: İstanbul, Bursa, Sakarya, Düzce, Bilecik, Kastamonu and Tokat. Six of them are fed through the Marmara ports — Ambarlı, Gebze, Gemlik — with a road leg between 25 and 180 km; for Kastamonu and Tokat the short route is Samsun, 290 and 145 km respectively. A 40'HC container arrives in 22–32 days on the Novorossiysk–Marmara line, and the minimum lot is one container. The difference between regions is not the sea leg but the inland one: containers arrive on the same freight rate, and the last hundred kilometres decide the cost. Where production is concentrated

The Turkish wood panel industry sits on four axes. Marmara is the busiest: İstanbul is the distribution and wholesale centre, the İnegöl district of Bursa is the furniture centre, Sakarya and Düzce hold the poplar peeling and plywood pressing lines, and the Bozüyük axis in Bilecik does both veneer and plywood. The Black Sea coast is the second axis: the Taşköprü–Tosya line in Kastamonu, and the area around Erbaa in Tokat — the largest plywood cluster on that coast.

For supply, this geography has one consequence: most of these plants sit close to a port. In all six Marmara provinces the road leg stays under 180 km, and in İstanbul it drops to 25. The container reaches the plant on a single truck leg after discharge, with no transshipment.

Region table

Distances are approximate and measured by road. Each province has its own page with a port table, transit time and freight.
ProvinceNearest portBy road, approx. kmWhat is there
İstanbulAmbarlı (İstanbul)2512 veneer producers. Distribution and warehousing hub: 12 veneer producers registered, with Keresteciler Sanayi Sitesi as the wholesale timber market.
BursaGemlik (Bursa)70İnegöl is Turkey’s furniture capital: 3,807 registered furniture companies. The buyer profile here is furniture and panels, not plywood.
SakaryaGebze (Kocaeli)110The centre of poplar growing; the largest local plywood line runs 250 m³ a day.
BilecikGemlik (Bursa)1305 veneer producers. Five veneer plants along the Bozüyük axis plus a large plywood mill operating since 1960.
TokatSamsun145The largest plywood hub on the Black Sea coast: the biggest local group runs over 70,000 m³ a year across three sites.
DüzceGebze (Kocaeli)17511 veneer producers. Second in Turkey with 11 veneer producers listed on Fordaq. Local output is mostly poplar — birch is imported.
KastamonuSamsun290Plywood and panel production along the Taşköprü–Tosya axis; the largest local line runs 23,500 m³ a year.

Which port serves which region

The three Marmara ports — Ambarlı, Gebze, Gemlik — are fed by the same sea-and-rail line: 22–32 days through Novorossiysk at 90–120 USD/m³. Choosing between them does not change the sea leg, only the inland one:

  • Ambarlı — 25 km to İstanbul; the natural choice for warehouses and customs brokers on the European side.
  • Gebze — Sakarya 110 km, Bursa 150 km, Düzce 175 km, Bilecik 180 km. The shortest option for the Anatolian side and most of eastern Marmara.
  • Gemlik — Bursa 70 km, Bilecik 130 km. Closer than Gebze for the İnegöl and Bozüyük axis.

Samsun is a separate calculation. For Kastamonu and Tokat it is far shorter than Marmara: 145 km to Tokat, 290 km to Kastamonu, against 700 and 520 km via Ambarlı. Freight to Black Sea ports is quoted per shipment, because the line is not a regular container service.

Outside Turkey: Egypt

The demand arrived on its own, which is why it has its own page. The Novorossiysk–Alexandria sea leg is 6–15 days — shorter than to Turkey, because there is no Bosphorus traffic and no rail transshipment. Egypt imported 36.7 million dollars of veneer in 2023, and Russia holds 84% of its plywood imports. Details: birch veneer supply to Egypt.

Beyond that we ship to China, India, the UAE, Iran, Iraq, the Eurasian Economic Union countries and North Africa. We do not ship to the EU, the UK or Japan — importing Russian-origin timber into those countries is prohibited. The detail is on the compliance page.

Format affects freight: 38 m³ of 1600 × 1600 fits a container against 33 m³ of 2600 × 1300. The full calculation is on the container loading page, and the current list is on the price list.

How to start

The order is the same in every region: take the port and transit time from your region page, pick a format from the price list, then run a single trial container. Samples are always free and go by courier — seeing the material on your own line before ordering is the cheapest check there is.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which provinces do you deliver to?

All of Turkey. The seven provinces with their own pages are simply where veneer and plywood production is concentrated: İstanbul, Bursa (İnegöl), Sakarya, Düzce, Bilecik (Bozüyük), Kastamonu and Tokat (Erbaa). We quote for any other address too — the only thing that changes is the length of the road leg from the nearest port; the sea leg and the price stay the same.

Which port does the cargo arrive at?

For the six Marmara provinces: Ambarlı, Gebze or Gemlik. All three are fed by the same sea-and-rail line through Novorossiysk, 22–32 days. For Kastamonu and Tokat the short route is Samsun — 145 km to Tokat and 290 km to Kastamonu, saving 555 and 230 km against Ambarlı. Freight to Black Sea and Mediterranean ports is quoted per shipment.

Turkey already has veneer mills — why import birch?

Because Turkey has no industrial birch forest. The 11 mills in Düzce, 5 in Bilecik and 12 registered in İstanbul mostly peel poplar, which grows in the Sakarya and Düzce plains and needs no import leg at all. The two materials do different jobs in the same panel: poplar gives a light, cheap core, birch gives a clean face and bending strength. Local veneer production does not replace birch — it supplies the other half of the same panel.

Does the price differ by region?

The veneer price is the same everywhere: 17,500 ₽/m³ ex-works, 29,900 ₽/m³ for the cut-to-size blank. Freight is what changes. The sea leg is identical for all three Marmara ports; the only variable is the road leg from port to your plant, between 25 and 290 km. Spread across the 33–42 m³ in a container, that difference works out at a few dollars per m³.

For which regions does railcar shipment make sense?

A railcar holds 102 m³ — roughly three containers. It lowers the cost per m³ for plants that buy regularly and have storage; the Sakarya, Kastamonu and Tokat pages cover the option in detail. It is not recommended for a first shipment: testing the material on your own line with a single container carries far less risk.

Do you ship outside Turkey?

Yes. Egypt has its own page — the Novorossiysk–Alexandria sea leg is 6–15 days. We also ship to China, India, the UAE, Iran, Iraq, the Eurasian Economic Union countries and North Africa. We do not ship to the EU, the UK or Japan: importing Russian-origin timber into those countries is prohibited.

Tell us the format, thickness and monthly volume

We will work out the cubic metres per container, the freight to your port and the lead time. We answer during Turkish business hours, in Turkish, English and Russian.
